12/26/2023 0 Comments Does daisuke amaya hate nicalis![]() If I can continue to make a living the way I am now, then I’m pretty satisfied with that. It’s a bit daunting to have to make things for money. If a company like Nintendo or Sony came to you with an unlimited budget to make Cave Story 2, would you take the deal or would you rather continue to work on a smaller scale? Or both? You have now worked with Playism and Nicalis, two wonderful, smaller-scale publishers. This way, I didn’t really have to worry about losing motivation. But by giving a part of the game to another person, I was able to focus on smaller parts while the stages in the game were steadily being created. When I worked alone, I would waste a day on a bug that I couldn’t figure out that by the evening, I would feel depressed about the current condition of the game. Kawanaka, who I met at a business incubator in Kyoto, was skilled with level design and production, so I was able to leave the level design and production in Kero Blaster up to him her. A project taking a grand total of five years, the music, graphics and characters were all created solely by him. But this time, when I finally decided to remake the game ( Gero Blaster), I wasn’t working alone, so for that half a year, I was able to make a significant amount of progress. Daisuke Amaya (), otherwise known as Pixel or Studio Pixel, is the acclaimed creator of the independent game Doukutsu Monogatari, otherwise known as Cave Story. I’ve had many days where I couldn’t get motivated and I’ve ended up wasting a whole day. Too many indie devs have had issues with them at this point. So in the end, I’m still making games. ![]() ![]() Regardless it should simply be noted that Nicalis has been pretty shady, and hasn't exactly been that supportive of indies like they would like people to think. His "cooperation" could simply be that he has to let them use his characters as per their contract. The official PR blurb from Nicalis says "developed with Pixels COOPERATION". Although apparently Daisuke Amaya has been credited with "adding small touches" to the game. This game is kind of an oddity, cause the game was developed by Nicalis, first and foremost. Also if I'm not mistaken Playism is also where the freeware original version of Cave Story is (which if I'm not mistaken, Amaya still has full rights to). Instead working with Playism (which is the company Nigoro turned to after Nicalis tried to screw them with La-Mulana) which have published both Kero Blaster and Pink Heaven. And Nicalis would definitely have to have ownership of the IP if they can send cease and desists to fan games built around Cave Story.Īgain all this is never been confirmed, but it should be noted that Daisuke Amaya has never had Nicalis publish any of his other games. The development is overseen by Nicalis, headed up by Tyrone Rodriguez - the same man who helped Amaya bring the game to other Nintendo platforms, and in fact. I know I remember finding it strange that Nicalis was using Cave Story characters pretty liberally, and remaking Cave Story twice. ![]() So again technically not theft, but legal and contractual theft taking advantage of someone who probably wasn't 100% clear on what he was agreeing to due to the language barrier. ![]() They just might have screwed him out of the IP when Amaya signed off on Nicalis bringing Cave Story to the Wii. The bottom line is that Nicalis didn't "steal" Cave Story from Daisuke Amaya. Interesting to see this discussion again. ![]()
